Five stories about music
The teacher answers five FASOUL questions about their path, inspiration and view of music.
How and when did you realise that music was your path?
When I was seventeen, during the summer, I timidly took my father's acoustic guitar that was standing in the corner. With nothing else at home, I secretly began taking my first steps toward music. I realized I was drawn to music when all the other activities that had previously dominated me became uninteresting (riding a scooter, computer games).
Did the people close to you support your choice?
My parents were supportive (my father once briefly played the bass guitar in his youth) and encouraged me to pursue this path and put effort into it because they saw my interest. There were, of course, difficulties. It was hard to juggle a regular office job while also playing in several bands. I have heard many times that music should be only a hobby, not a chosen life path.
Which musical genres do you prefer?
Earlier I was a hardcore metal fan, but now I can see beauty and individuality in other musical genres. It's hard to name just one genre, but I would give priority to rock/metal (and perhaps jazz after that).
How do you imagine your future in music?
I see myself only as a musician. As a teacher, I want to help others grow and convey the knowledge I have accumulated. To have that knowledge, I constantly improve by participating in online seminars. Today I would like to feel freer in the jazz style, to improvise more freely.
What would you tell someone who is still unsure about trying music?
I would simply advise not to be afraid and, without overthinking, dare to try yourself in the musical sphere, because no one was born learning and it's never too late to start. If you don't like it, at least you'll know you tried. Of course, the sooner you start, the faster you learn and the better you play the chosen instrument(s). You would probably encourage by simply showing that everything can be learned gradually and that not everything is “rocket science” as it sometimes seems.
